What’s in a name? My family, at the suggestion of my brothers chose my name, Edward, after a young man they admired. The name itself, Edward, means “resolute protector”.
In the bible, names have meanings too. The name John, as in John the Baptist, means “God is gracious”. When Elizabeth and Zechariah thought they would be unable to have children, God announces to them that they will have a child. They name him John, because God graced them a with a son. The would be prophet and forerunner to Jesus is a gift from God, and named as such.
But what about Jesus? Mary and Joseph name the child Jesus, because the angel told them too. The name was chosen by God.
30 The angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Mary. God is honoring you.31 Look! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. – Luke 1
The name Jesus, as Mary and Joseph would have known, means God saves. In the naming of the Christ child, we are told the most important reason Jesus was born. He was born to save.
The glitz and the glamour, the pressure and the presents, can overwhelm us in the Christmas season. Let’s remember this simple point, the reason for the celebration, salvation has come, and his name says it all, Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, in the chaos, help us to keep it simple. Like a loving Father, hold our hands; save us from the madness. Bring your salvation again, and again, and again. Remind us of your love. Hold us close to you. May the Christmas lights remind us of the one true light, Jesus. Amen.
