I know peaks and valleys. I live in the hills near the mountains and I have been involved with youth ministry for a couple of decades. If there is one thing I could give all of those kids it would be confidence. Confidence that comes in knowing that they are loved by God, and nothing can take that away from them. Their identity doesn’t come from what they do, or who they hang out with, or who they are dating, it comes from God. Rooted identity leads to confidence and self-esteem.
When the prophet Elijah shows up in 1 Kings, we don’t know much about him, yet he has the confidence to show up before the king and predict a severe drought.
Elijah from Tishbe, who was one of the settlers in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As surely as the Lord lives, Israel’s God, the one I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain these years unless I say so.” – 1 Kings 17: 1 (CEB)
Did you catch that, Elijah’s confidence and boldness to come before the king with bad news comes in knowing the One he serves.
It’s not just our youth either. Even folks who present themselves with bravado, are often masking deep insecurities. So, how’s your confidence? Rooted in anything other than God’s promised love, your confidence is destined to shatter. Elijah’s life would go through peaks and valleys, but God was always with him.
For those of you struggling with self-esteem, know that God’s love didn’t stop with Elijah. God loves you too. Proof? Incarnation, Cross, and Resurrection of Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, we need to know you love us. Show us again today. Reveal your love. Thanks. Amen.
