“There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love. We love because God first loved us.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:18-19‬ ‭CEB‬‬

What do you fear? Foreigners? (Other) Religions? We live in culture that seems to be driven by fear. We learned on the school playground, that “might makes right”, even if we don’t want to admit it.

This may be the way of the world, where even our politicians get by with sexual harassment and still get elected and re-elected (both parties in America, even Presidents). Those who abuse power seem more empowered. How much of our day-to-day life is driven by fear and hate, that we would vote for folks we know abuse power and authority? There is a better way, and those of who know Jesus and his teachings, and read our bibles should know better. There is different and better way as 1 John (see above) and Rev. king remind us:

Darkness cannot drive out darkness;

only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate;

only love can do that.

Hate multiplies hate,

violence multiplies violence,

and toughness multiplies toughness

in a descending spiral of destruction….

The chain reaction of evil —

hate begetting hate,

wars producing more wars —

must be broken,

or we shall be plunged

into the dark abyss of annihilation.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – Strength to Love 1963

Today is another opportunity to chose love over fear, to chose the way of the cross, to love our neighbor, to move beyond our fears. We have the chance to live a different way.

Prayer: Lord, you are love. Teach me your ways. Move me beyond my fears. Amen.
