14 My brothers and sisters, what good is it if people say they have faith but do nothing to show it? Claiming to have faith can’t save anyone, can it?15 Imagine a brother or sister who is naked and never has enough food to eat.16 What if one of you said, “Go in peace! Stay warm! Have a nice meal!”? What good is it if you don’t actually give them what their body needs? 17 In the same way, faith is dead when it doesn’t result in faithful activity…26 As the lifeless body is dead, so faith without actions is dead. – James 2: 14-17, 26
“Put your money where your mouth is.” “Put up or shut up.” “You either do or you don’t.”
We live in results driven culture. And while I don’t think that’s exactly what James is talking about here, there is some truth in this – our faith is worthless if it isn’t put into action. We can debate the best ways to put it into action, but there it is, it must bear fruit.
So here’s the question: Are the lives of the people you encounter, benefited by your faith? Not that you set their beliefs or theology straight, but is their day better because you believe and do you act in love because you believe?
Faith in action most often shows up in service, and it’s how God sees greatness – Not in power exerted, or in success and wins, but in service to those in any need.
But that’s not the way it will be with you. Whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant. – Mark 10:43(CEB)
Today, in the middle of it all, you will have the chance to help someone, to make someone else’s life better. Maybe in small ways, maybe in big ways. I pray we make the most of that opportunity.
Prayer: Lord, show me who to serve and how to put my faith in action to help them today. Amen.
