I’m a people person. It’s part of my personality. I generally believe that most people are good even if they mess up once in a while. Some folks would say I am naive. I like most everybody I meet unless you directly threaten me or my family. Even though it’s come back to bite me more than I care to admit, I’m a trusting soul. I trust that you want to do good and that you are a good person.
Under attack from someone I had considered a friendly acquaintance, my brother gave me this advice, “You and I like most everybody, we trust, we give folks the benefit of the doubt, but that doesn’t mean they like you. Not everybody is wired the way we are.” That was a harsh lesson to learn.
No matter how hard you try, no matter how much good you do our how good your intentions are, somebody somewhere just isn’t going to like you. I’m still befuddled when someone I trusted stabs me in the back. That being said, I tend not to trust them ever again.
Whether it jealousy, gender, skin color, success, personality, or control issues, some folks just aren’t going to like you. You can’t control their heart or their actions.
You can call on The Lord for help. We see this throughout the bible, but especially in the Psalms attributed to King David. Whether it was political or plain jealousy, David knew there were plenty of people within his own kingdom who wanted to see his demise.
The naysayers, the opposition, those who would like to see your demise, they’re out there. Here’s a tiny snapshot into David’s heart and how he dealt with it:
Psalm 35:17 (CEB)
17 How long, my Lord, will you watch this happen?
Rescue me from their attacks;
rescue my precious life from these predatory lions!
This scripture this morning reminds me that not everybody wishes me well. The Opposition, the Adversary is real. What can we do. Keep on keeping on in the faith in our trust in The Lord, and pray for deliverance and rescue from those on the prowl just looking to take us down. The Lord is our strength.
Prayer: Lord, I don’t always sense those who would like to knock me down, those folks who are out to get me. You deal with them. Where I am wrong, fix me. Show me Your ways. Where they are wrong, rescue me from them and/or change their hearts. Amen.
