Distractions

John 10:7-10 (CEB)

So Jesus spoke again, “I assure you that I am the gate of the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and outlaws, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out and find pasture.10 The thief enters only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came so that they could have life—indeed, so that they could live life to the fullest.

I have been blessed with an incredible family and an amazing work.  I am called and blessed to be a husband, a dad, and a pastor.  I do find that these blessings require most of my time and attention.  If I’m not intentional, these blessing begin to take over as the most important things in my life.  When they bear that kind of weight, they can become a burden rather than a blessing.

Here’s what I mean, if work and family become my primary focus, then I have already lost direction and will feel like I’m running against the wind because life seems to depend on me and my limited abilities.  At that point, these incredible blessing begin to drain me physically and spiritually rather than add life to my days.

Jesus is the gateway to life, not family, not vocation, not friends, not wealth, not anything else.  If we aren’t walking through the gate of God’s love and grace, then all of blessings God grants will rob us.  God loves us and wants to have this full and amazing life.  It will be full of ups and downs, it will be wild, but it will be great.  It won’t be without suffering, but it won’t be without peace, because it won’t be without God, unless we choose to crowd God out with other good things.  It’s like the old saying, the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.  In this case, keep God #1.

Questions:

1.  What are you greatest blessings?  Do they seem to take over your life?

2.  What is the main thing in your life? Is God really your gateway to life?  Or is it family?  Or is it your work?

Prayer:  Lord, you have blessed us with many good things.  May we never lose sight that you are Providence, you are the provider, you are the giver.  May we keep our focus on you.  Everything else can be taken away, but your love never ends, never fails.
